Baby it's cold outside....

This is the newest installment at Original Penguin, Covent Garden. The brief given to Elemental Design was to add some Christmassy elements to the existing window scheme, which we had installed a couple of months ago.

I designed some happy Penguin vinyl, and a large glittery Penguin to share the plinth with the mannequins. We added some red foil globes, some presents and a Christmas tree inside the shop. I did the vinyl all by myself! Quite a challenge but I proved to myself that I can do it.

YESSSS!

The speech bubbles now feature some Christmassy phrases... And it really is SO COLD OUTSIDE!

A few months ago, Elemental Design got a brief to design and build the Christmas windows fir Ely's and Morleys (department stores in Wimbledon and Brixton).

At the time I was like "whaaat? it's August!"

But then we all got really into it and I felt like my initial ideas designs were prominent from the beginning of the project right through to the end. I popped by Ely's to take some pictures and was so happy to see my work in the flesh!

Monday was a fun day this week! Me and Sarah got to go and work in the basement of Liberty, to decorate and bedazzle this frog for Liberty's Christmas windows. He was made by Elemental Design for Liberty's Swampy scheme... The other windows have all kinds of creatures, including giant spiders, jellyfish, flying fish, a mouse flying through the sky on a bicycle.... eee!

A small boutique in Kensington, that sells high fashion and also offers styling appointments with the Italian sisters who own the shop.

Elemental Design installed 2 windows, based on a new product that the shop was about to stock - Juliet's Got a Gun - a new perfume.

We came up with this scheme, where the mannequins are surrounded by stereotypically masculine guns, given a sparkly finish (by myself in the workshop - that was a fun day!), and also more feminine feathers... The mannequins themselves have oversized black roses as heads.

The shop has also unfortunately had a series of break-ins, so we hoped that this scheme might deter any future deviants!

It's been ages!

Back at the beginning of September Elemental Design installed these magnificent pods into the atrium at Liberty. They were inspired by Manolo Blahnik's new collection, and his pop up shop in Liberty.

We spent weeks making flowers using individually cut petals from luxurious fabrics... These were carefully wired into huge pods (2m diameter!) and we spent the night at Liberty installing them.

At 7am we lay down on the floor in the scarf room, and watched as the pods were hoisted up towards the ceiling by some funny blokes on cables. Very surreal.

But beautiful non? go and see for yourself...

Another project that I worked recently on at Elemental Design - a 1950s cocktail party in the Original Penguin windows in Covent Gardens!

I went along to the install which was fun, and designed the wallpaper and some of the elements in the window. I also found the pineapple lurking downstairs in the Elemental workshop, yay!

Yikes! It's been two months since my last post. This is mainly due to the fact that I have been employed (HOORAY!) therefore am mega busy and slacking on the blogging front. Soon I will learn to juggle everything... I am now officially working for Elemental Design in Brixton, as junior assistant designer. Yessss!

Anyways - this here is an amazing install at Selfridges, for Chopard jewellery, which I worked on with Elemental. Elemental were commissioned by Chopard to create showcases for the Selfridges Wonder Rooms. To celebrate their 150th Anniversary, Chopard have released 15 watches, each based on an animal, with diamonds and sparklies and gold and mother of pearl and loads of other shimmery shiny stuff...Bling! Apparently the watches took up to 700 hours to make, by some amazing steady handed watch-makers (?!!) in Switzerland.

Elemental asked Andy Macgregor to help out and make the animals for the windows, and he did a super job! We all cooed and ooed and aahed over the animals when they arrived, my favourite was the Koala with the baby on her back.

In the studio we made the flowers and assembled all the lazer cut trees and leaves. If you should ever need some cherry blossom or dandelions made in paper, I'm your girl. I'm still having dreams about those origami blossom flowers....

After a 7 hour intense overnight install, the showcases were done and we all stood back in wonder (harharhar)... These are some snaps I managed to take during the install, but hopefully I can get hold of some better ones for you to feast your eyes on soon.

It has been a while since my last post, I am a little sad to admit. However for good reason! I have been interning with an exciting visual merchandising company in Brixton (Elemental Design).

Spring is here and blossom is flying around making my eyes all itchy but I don't care, because finally my rainbow maker is back in action! The combination of early morning i-pod sessions and sunlight has been inspiring me to do stuff, and my latest idea has got me all excited!

I am shocked at how hard it is to find a good photo of a rainbow on the internet. Mental note: upload better ones.

So long story cut not so short, I have some things in the pipe line so come back soon: rainbows, paper flowers, dancing, Four Tet, sunshine, Greek mythology. S'all I'm sayin....

A hectic five days was spent waking at the crack o' dawn to bake up some goodies, then transporting them rather precariously on public transport to Carnaby St. Tea & Cake with Fifi and Lola went well, lots of good feedback ("the most delicious brownies I have ever had" - Richard Danks) and lots of people asked us if we have a shop. So if anyone wants to fund/sponsor us to open one, I reckon we would have quite the successful tea time stop shop.

The event was a lot of fun and exciting to be a part of. I drank my body weight in Tiger beer and then Alibi the following mornings. Met some great people, watched Mike print loads of t-shirts and witnessed Andy cruising around on a guitar on wheels. splendid!

I await the printed version with anticipation and maybe even some fear, as Holly and I performed a glittery kitchen scene on Sunday afternoon for the magazine, to go alongside one of our recipes. I am still sparkling.

Open daily from 10am-9pm there are live events taking place throughout the week, with lots of free beer provided by Tiger for the evening events."

Holly and I (Fifi and Lola) will be hosting a tea & cake shop, open daily 2-6pm. Here, visitors can watch other goings-on in the gallery, chat, all whilst enjoying proper English tea and some delicious home-made cakes.

This Sunday Fifi and Lola, aka me and Holly, will be selling fings wot are nice at the 'Let's Get Ready to Jumble' spring clean edition at Bar Music Hall on Curtain Road, London. I was spring cleaning our loft recently and dug out boxes of vintage Apple Computers t-shirts, sweatshirts and other goodies which my dear old Dad has let me have. So our stall will consist of menswear for Mac geeks, vintage delights from Lola's Vintage Wardrobe, handmade Easter & Mother's Day cards and gifts, jewels fit for a Queen, and of course some deeeeelicious CAKES!

Jumble mania goes from 12-6pm. Free entry! Amazing stuff at low low prices. Come on down! You'll find us near the bar (hopefully) munching cake and squarking.

Working with mount board hurts. Holly and I made these hangers for Craig Lawrence's gold A/W10 collection. The photo is the model used for Craig's film (sorry I don't remember her name). This collection appears to be pretty popular. Fans include Lady Gaga amongst many others.

Yesterday I visited the Design Museum, London, and saw the Brit Insurance Designs of the Year exhibition. These are a few of my favourites: The prism chandelier, (iwantoneofthosenowplease) the rotating pandas for WWF, a delicate light installation, a carved tree trunk (wow), an interactive LED installation (Jason and I had a bit of fun) and the rainbow of books!

The exhibition runs until the 6th June. Worth a visit!

Sunday morning saw me peel myself out of bed after a busy night's work, dress and scamper off to town for another presentation, this time of cooperativedesigns' A/W10 collection Stacken Blochen. It was held at Proud Central, from 11am-1pm. I was greeted with a glass of Prosseco, (I added some OJ, a bit early for fizz even for me!) and was offered some tiny Paul treats, yum!

The place was a monochromatic feast for the eyes. A man named David White designed and installed all the wallpaper, which made for an excellent backdrop for the models. It was almost hypnotic. Downstairs was like a catwalk in slow motion, we all took some snaps and chatted about the portraits upstairs, which were created by friends of the designers, such as Fred Butler, Rosy Nicholas and Louise Gray.

The collection was great, I am always a fan of stripes and geometric patterns. There were also some fantastic head pieces/hats, made by miliner Noel Stewart. I heard one man say that one of the hats was fit for Lady Gaga, I am not sure if Noel would take that as a compliment or insult, but nevertheless his hats proved very popular.

I also got to take home a lovely goodie bag (perks of knowing the event coordinator - Holly!) which included some limited edition mittens. Yay! In the bag was also a zine, which featured the portraits from the presentation. Splendid!

Cake Glorious Cake

February has been a busy month so far, with several opportunities and excuses to whip up a batch of biscuits or cupcakes. Holly and I are launching our cake/party business in March, alongside our blog (fingswotarenice), so we have been visiting cake decoration shops and frantically exchanging emails containing recipes, research and ridiculous rambles about our hopes and dreams. ^ Pictured ^ are some red velvet valentines, sparkle hearts, and vanilla watermelons.

These are the gold cupcakes that we made for Craig Lawrence's presentation at London Fashion Week last Friday. They were vanilla sponge with chocolate buttercream icing and edible gold glitter. They proved to be quite popular! I even managed to feed some to the carpet by dropping some on the floor in front of some guests (embarrassing!!). The gold theme was inspired by Craig's AW10 collection, which is golden and fabulous! We also made some hangers for Craig's stand in the New Gen exhibition space, however in all the cake and icing madness I forgot to photograph them before they left Thames Ditton. So Holly is on the case and I shall hopefully be uploading a picture soon.

My good pal Freddie took me to the private view of this exhibition a couple of weeks ago, and I thought the stuff was splendid! Very simple use of wood and paint, but put together with imagination and finesse. I wanted to buy all the wooden postcard-type pieces, which were named something like "flags of our mothers". The rainbow piece (shown at the top) was my favourite - so clever! It's making me think again about materials, I must not stop using new/unexpected things.

Better late than never I suppose! I have been fully immersed in Christmas cheer and folly and food, thus creating a back-log in some blogging. I meant to put these up on Christmas eve, but instead I played the secret santa+fizz+inappropriate behaviour game.

Holly and I (or should I say Lola and I) took part in the Shoreditch sisters' WI Xmas Fete on 13th December, which included our little stall pictured above, and lots of mulled wine, some carol singers and then a guy with a double bass playing christmassy choones, and also some classic ones from the Fifi and Lola repertoire. There were animals a plenty, in particular a small fluffy dog (called Fluffy??) and some familiar faces kindly came to show us some support by eating our cakes and buying our stocking fillers and vintage goodies.

'Nest'

The work was themed around "femininity" and what we perceive to be feminine. I went on the fact that women nest, make their homes nice places to live in. Since moving back home, I have this urge to nest, to make a house my own. I made it using chicken wire and some fibres that I bought from a shop in North London. I also added a touch of sparkle and beading, to suggest it being like a magpie nest, as I love sparkly and shiny things! The lights and sparkle glasses add to the sparkling effect.

Next week I am taking part in an exhibition in Bath, featuring 9 female artists/designers. It is being curated by the ever-amazing Alice Nyong, who has arranged the whole affair, including a stall with some goodies for sale. I have been busy making my piece, to be revealed after the opening, but let's just say it involves some chicken wire, some banana fibres and horse hair, some sticks and a touch of sparkle (a la Aebischer!). The private view is next Tuesday evening, 6-9pm, so if you're in the hood or around and about, come say Hi.

Supermarket Soiree

Well here we are, in supermarket gear, at the door of the Biscuit building. The party went down a storm, although we only caught the very beginning and final few minutes, as Holly and I were meeting and greeting downstairs. I foolishly didn't take any photos upstairs, I was overwhelmed by moustache mugs and vintage glasses and forgot all about my camera. However mademoiselle Butler took some grand snaps. I may have done some shopping but I cannot reveal my purchase(s) as it is a Christmas present. Well done Sarah, twas a jolly time!

Tomorrow night (Dec 1st) is going to be the best jingley jolly party of the season! SupermarketSarah is hosting a shopping extravaganza at Poke, in the Biscuit building on Redchurch St, featuring vintage treats from the Work It! ladies amongst other designers, and golden shopping baskets to put it all in! There is also a promise of cake (HUZZAH!) and jingle bell tunes to get us all in the mood. I shall be greeting all the lovely shoppers at the door, and we supermarket gals are going to be wearing supermarket dresses made by Joanna. More photos to come.....

A few weeks ago I assisted costume designer Sarah Magnay on a music video for artist Wolfgang.

The song is called "The king and all his men". The video was shot at Shepperton Studios, and was directed by Daniel Brereton.

I helped Sarah source props, make bits of costumes and dress the actors on the day of the shoot. As you can see, the theme was monochrome. We dressed all the actors, except Wolfgang, whose sister is his stylist. He had an awesome stripey suit jacket on, made stripey using very simple techniques.

LONDON FASHION WEEK - S/S10

Fred Butler invited me once again to assist her during London Fashion Week in September, at Somerset House. Fred's stand looked fantastic, the location and general feel of the New Gen area was exciting and inviting for people to visit. Fred's collection for Spring/Summer 2010 is beautifully handcrafted, as always, and features a wide spectrum of colour and texture. I was lucky enough to be able to wear one of Fred's brooches, which can be worn on the body or in the hair or anywhere!

More highlights from Fashion Week include going to David David's presentation and party in Soho, where a guerilla fashion show took place featuring designs by Nova Dando. The dancers suddenly appeared on the roof terrace, and jumped around to some loud tunes, all sporting garments by Nova (one is pictured with Holly Giselle). Amazing!

And finally, I was very lucky and was able to go to Peter Jensen's presentation where models wearing Jensen's designs walked through the room like dolls, and posed so effortlessly for photographs. My favourite Jensen design had to be the watermelon bag! YUM.

This week I have been assisting a Mr Jamie Brown and Jiggery Pokery paint the outside of the Old Blue Last pub on Curtain road. Becks have commissioned art inspired by music, and this piece was inspired by Love Cats, by the Cure. We painted 4 cats: a tiger, a panther, a snow leopard and a cheetah. Miaow!

After a few weeks of summer fun and Croatian madness I have returned to the creative buzz in London. This week I was helping JIGGERY POKERY on a project with Dazed & Confused magazine and Vauxhall cars. The event, 'Vauxhall Skate', took place on Wednesday night at Shoreditch venue Village Underground. The Jiggery Pokery girls, Anna and Lauren, were art directing the event, and came up with a fantastical concept of all-seeing eyes meets prisms and rainbows. Amongst many tasks I drew on a car using a poster pen, creating a line that glowed under UV lights. There was a big multi-coloured teepee by the entrance and a mirrorball car and a roller rink and hotdogs and mojitos (a plenty!) and popcorn and much much more! Jiggery Pokery did an outstanding job and I hope to help them again in future.

Only 2 days until our hand in. SH*T! It's hectic to say the least, but in a sick and twisted way I am actually enjoying these last moments at uni.

So on the 5th June we launch our degree show. This is the poster for the show, designed by Joe Hinder, photograph of Jack Williams' art installation.

These are but a few snaps from a recent visit to Weston-Super-Mare. They are the beginnings of my final project, which is a poster campaign to encourage people to visit the British seaside. A windy yet fun day was had by all!

A well deserved break...

After months of pulling my hair out and biting my nails my parents thought it was necessary that I take a break for a few days. I couldn't have agreed more, and happily obliged. We went to Le Touquet, a lovely little town on the Northern coast of France. Here I went for windy beach walks, ate some delicious food, and napped like a baby! I also spotted some fantastic easter treats in the windows of local patisseries, like fruits with smiley faces!

Progress - the result

These are the pieces I exhibited at Progress. They are abstract illustrations in response to newspaper headlines about people affected by the recession. I (painfully) made loads of 3D shapes out of paper and arranged them in a way which illustrated the rise and fall of one man in Essex who lost his job as a paper doilies factory manager, having to give up his £60K household income and survive on £60.50 a week. The other was a representation of the glamourous life of Vegas showgirls working at the Tropicana casino who lost their jobs when the casino was forced to turn off all its' lights forever.

This weekend marks my first real exhibition! Taking place in Dray Walk gallery, Brick Lane, London, it consists of work by 45 students on my course (graphic design/illustration/interactive design). The organising and curating has been mental but it's looking good at the moment and fingers crossed will be a success... These are the invites, screenprinted by hand. Hope to see you there!

POETRY TAXI - Bath Lit festival 09

For the past few months I have been a member of a team working on some designs for Bath Literature Festival '09 - POETRY TAXI - and also part of the construction team! After weeks of designing, deliberation and discussion, we went for a "pencil fence" to surround the vehicle and some life-size poets to provide information. The designs were printed onto vinyl and then rolled out onto plywood and MDF, and cut out. It was really hard work but it payed off when we saw the scene in the heart of Bath's city centre, two weekends in a row.

Anderson M came to Bath and directed a workshop with about 20 of us third years. It was really useful! We chose a headline from a newspaper and had to create a poster using the text and any found imagery. I had some fun with a scanner and Photoshop, and used my black foam letters.

Dave on our course was involved in a ruckus last weekend in Bath and was unfortunately hospitalised. So I rounded up the troops and had 15 people make a letter each to be used in our performance for a card. This was the result: A lovely card for Dave! He is much better now.

Newbridge

My latest work - I have been designing artwork for trip hop duo Newbridge's album. The idea was to create a scene that encapsulates a feeling of 1920's style, mixed with modern aspects. I made the radio using cardboard, it's about 5ft tall! I then photographed it in a studio, using lovely purple gels over the flash, and my secret weapon, the sparkle glasses, over the camera lens. The type was all letter-pressed by hand.

Fred Butler!

Over the Christmas break I had the pleasure to spend some time in Fred Butler's studio, in Angel, helping her with some ongoing projects, including pieces for her new collection, to be featured in London Fashion Week 2009. Fred is an accessories and prop designer, making colourful and unusual pieces used in photoshoots and worn by musicians like Patrick Wolf. I made lots of things, including pompoms inspired by licorice all sorts (as seen above). My time with Fred allowed me to peek into life as a designer in London, not to mention to meet some successful and creative people, like Judy Blame, to visit scary places like Dalston market (!) and fun spots like the Double Bar. I also had the pleasure of being with Fred during her radio debut, where she spoke to Steve Lamacq on BBC 6 for his 'good day bad day' feature! Fred is very inspiring, and it was lovely to meet her and to see how she works on a day to day basis.

This is a T-shirt I designed as a Christmas present for Double Cee. It's a three-colour screen print. the initial pattern design was a for a sheet of tokens for a swap shop that I helped stage at uni, called "le Grotto de Change".

Bath Fringe Festival poster design

These are some of my designs for the Fringe Festival poster. I was inspired by some of the theatre I saw during last year's festival. I saw some street performances which were unusual and very funny, so I wanted to incorporate the spirit and slight strangeness of it all with my photos. I made the paper skirt and the mask was sewn in felt. The strange colour effect comes from shooting the photos through my sparkle glasses, which are a bit like 3D glasses only much better!

A journey - San Francisco and Las Vegas

In February 2008 I went on a trip to San Francisco and Las Vegas. These are some drawings I did, using the American flag as my colour range. I wanted the drawings to be simple and sketch-like, to connote the impression of taking notes whilst travelling around the cities.

CD - Seal

Animals of the Gyre - Graphic Novel

These are photographs of pages taken from the graphic novel I created during my second year. It was called Animals of the Gyre. It was inspired by an article I read in Vice magazine about an island of rubbish floating in the Pacific Ocean, somewhere between Japan and Hawaii. I created images based on what creatures I imagined would be living on this island: the Gyre.
